Therapy Description

A soft tissue treatment which aims to consider the client as a whole for relaxation, and stress busting.

Holistic or therapeutic massage used to be called Swedish massage.  Its focus is on principal strokes of effleurage (flowing stroke), petrisssage (kneading), tapotement (percussion), friction and vibration.  These techniques should be artfully and purposefully combined to treat the patient according to their momentary clinical needs and physical responses.  This is a more lyrical and less dynamic style of massage generally.  It can however, be quite stimulating when required to be.  This is an ideal releasing and soothing treatment for overall body and mind wellness. If you have never had a massage or are wary about deeper pressure, this is a perfect treatment to begin with.

Diego, M. & Field, T. (2009). Moderate pressure massage elicits a parasympathetic nervous system response. International
Journal of Neuroscience, 119, 630-638.

RESULTS: The participants who received the moderate pressure massage exhibited a parasympathetic nervous system response characterised by an increase in HF, suggesting increased vagal efferent activity and a decrease in the LF/HF ratio, suggesting a shift from sympathetic to parasympathetic activity that peaked during the first half of the massage period. On the other hand, those who received the light pressure massage exhibited a sympathetic nervous system response characterised by decreased HF and increased LF/HF.
